The Fruit of Our New Nature:  Temperance

As disciples of Christ, we are new creatures with new natures (2 Corinthians 5:17). The governing of the new nature is received through the application of God’s word and by the leading of the Holy Spirit (John 14:26). When we try to govern our new nature by the same mindset, principles or laws used to govern our old nature, we find ourselves following feelings/emotions, opinions, etc., instead of following renewed minds through our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.

Temperance is a fruit of the Spirit that empowers us to live free from sin and
degradation. Temperance is freedom, rather than bondage. Through temperance, we have the freedom to exercise self-control by not allowing our flesh to control or dictate our actions. We are free to overcome the temptation to do the things that will produce bad results. It is Spirit-led management of our lives. It is the governing of one’s self, using our God-given right to choose our actions through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Temperance is a fruit of our new nature that must be developed by exercising it in our everyday lives. Similar to the way we develop our physical muscles through exercise,
so it is with temperance. Exercising temperance is applying the benefits of the freedom we receive from the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. It is the spirit man telling the flesh that you are no longer bound to the desires of the flesh, but that you are free to walk in righteousness (God’s way of doing things). The Apostle Paul states in Romans 7:15-20 that there are things that our flesh wants to do, or operate in, but our
new nature will not be in agreement. Temperance yields discipline and will help you walk in a spirit of Holiness. One should never say, “I don’t have temperance.” Rather, we should all be motivated to embrace a spirit that our temperance develops and becomes stronger the more we exercise it in our daily lives.
